Chaining the beast of examination malpractice in online exams – The Godfrey Okoye University Model
Godfrey Okoye University is a private university that belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Nigeria, fully licensed and accredited by the National Universities Commission. The university, which got its licence in 2009, has been named one of the fastest-growing private universities in Nigeria, and also one of the best ten private universities in Nigeria (Times Higher Education Ranking 2020).
The Covid-19 pandemic, which has unleashed incalculable difficulties on many universities in Nigeria, has brought the best out of Godfrey Okoye University. Apart from moving all its activities online, the university has also devised a means to monitor all its online examinations to prevent all forms of examination malpractice.
Students log in to access our robust examination platform, turn on their webcam, and then begin their examination. With their webcam on, the ICT Unit, the invigilating lecturers and even the vice-chancellor can watch the students and their surroundings as they write their examination. The activities of students during the examinations are also recorded automatically for a possible review if need be. Besides, once the webcam is on, “copy and paste” is automatically disabled. Also, all browser activities are monitored and recorded. Each examination is timed with a time indicator attached, and once the time is up the student is automatically logged out and the answer script submitted. This means that if the student fails to click on the “submit button”, the system does it automatically once the student is logged out. With this arrangement, Godfrey Okoye has given the monster of malpractice during online examinations a real fatal blow.
