Convocation is one of the very best times of the year for the university because it is an event tailored to celebrate the giant strides and accomplishments of its past years. In Godfrey Okoye University, it is an occasion to examine what makes the university unique: the narrative of its all-round connectivity. It was in this light that the university successfully held its 10th Convocation Ceremony from Sunday, 13 November through Sunday, 20 November, 2022. The theme of this year’s convocation is “Celebrating Institutional Connectivity.”
Marking this milestone, the university graduates 9 graduands with first class degrees, 148 with second class (upper) division, 149 with second class (lower) division and 32 others with a third class. In all, there was a total of 338 graduands from the 2021/2022 set.
The Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Dr. Christian Anieke (Eb. Mitterkirchen Austria), FLSN, FAL, in his speech while congratulating the graduands stated that he is sending the graduands off with a heart brimming over with expectations.
According to him, the institution have undoubtedly produced graduates who are incredibly smart, academically and socially intelligent, spiritually sound and emotionally brilliant and ready to conquer and dominate the intellectual space of their world.
He charged them never to stop flying on the wings of their dreams. In his words, “Remember who you are: a GO. A GO is a graduate of GO University, always on the go and pushing epistemic boundaries unstoppably.” The VC further extended blessings of greatness and influence on the graduands.
In his earlier remarks, the VC painted a picture of how the narrative of the success of the university is driven by the principle of connectivity. He further disclosed that the convocation ceremony is the grand finale of a number of events lined up to celebrate the 10th convocation.
The events lined up for the 10th convocation ceremony are as follows:
Sunday, 13 November 2022 –Convocation opening mass to usher in the convocation activities.
Tuesday, 15 November 2022 –Go Uni marathon and press briefing.
The takeoff for the marathon was from the thinkers corner campus to the main campus at Ugwuomu Nike with over 400 participants of which 41 are students of GO Uni. The winner of the race Tosin Adedeji from Ogun state with tag no: 036 for the male category and Charity Agofure from Delta State with tag no: 037 for the female category were awarded ₦1,000,000.00 each. Other winners from the 2nd runner up to the first twenty runners were also awarded.
Wednesday, 16 November 2022 – 11th Inaugural Lecture and Inauguration of the Centre for Innovation, Development and Entrepreneurship Africa (CIDEA).
The inaugural lecture was delivered by a professor of political science –Augustine Onyema Ocheoha (mni) Ph.D on the topic “Recurring Questions on Nigeria’s National Stability: The Systems and Holistic Paradigm Option.” The professor in his lecture attempted to resolve the Nigerian question of national stability.
Thursday, 17 November 2022 –Students’ Day.
The VC while addressing the students during the Students’ Day stated that the students activities is part and parcel of the life of Go Uni. He further said that it is a core value of the university dialogue with itself, God, of all courses and human learning and this dialogue instils confidence.
Friday, 18 November 2022 –Conferment of Emeritus Professorship; Opening of the Hall of Fame; Convocation Lecture and Convocation Dinner.
Three professors to wit: Prof. Dr. Festus C. Eze, Prof. Dr. John A. Eze and Prof. Dr. Romanus N. Egudu were conferred with the Emeritus Professorship.
The opening of the Hall of Fame commenced immediately afterwards with the induction of over 50 persons including Mr. Peter Obi, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Mr. Peter Mbah. The catholic bishops of Enugu and Abuja, Most Rev. Dr. Callistus C.V.C Onaga and Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama amongst others were also inducted.
According to the VC, the Hall of Fame contains list of names of noteworthy people chosen by a group of electors due to their achievements and contributions.
Later on the same day, the convocation lecture was delivered by Prof. Ken Ife, a development economist with the theme “Nigeria: The State of the Macro Economy.” Delivering the convocation lecture, the development economist stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s policy is not working because 80 percent of the nation’s money is not in circulation. He further explained that there were structural factors responsible for cost-push inflation in the country such as paucity of power, bad roads, water, rail transport and the rising cost of diesel.
Saturday, 19 November 2022 –Convocation Ceremony Award of Degrees.
Sunday, 20 November 2022 –Thanksgiving mass to round off the convocation activities.
Some of the dignitaries who attended the memorable occasion are the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi (ably represented); Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese & Proprietor / Promoter of the University, Most Rev. Dr. CVC Onaga; Catholic Archbishop of Abuja and Chancellor of the University, Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius Ayau Kaigama; Chairman of the board of trustees, Prof. Dr. Bartho Okolo OFR, INSM, FASI; Prochancellor & Chairman of Governing council –Prof. Dr. Christian Nwachukwu Okeke (COH) whom all delivered their address at the convocation.
Also, the visiting Vice Chancellors from other universities, guests, schools, students, faculty, staff and the press graced the occasion with their presence.
The Highlight of the convocation ceremony was the presentation of goodwill messages from the Vice Chancellors’ in attendance, presentation of prizes, award of degrees and conferment of Honorary Doctoral of Degree of which Chief Anthony O. Mogboh SAN was conferred with a Doctor of Laws amongst others.
The overall best graduating student of the 2021/ 2022 set, Emeka Priscilla Adaobi with a CGPA of 4.78 from the department of Biological Sciences delivered her valedictory speech.
Congratulatory messages and speeches of the Honorary Doctorate Awardees were also received.
