GOUNI VC wants Academic Staff to be Innovative and Creative
The Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University Enugu, Reverend Father Prof Christian Anieke wants the academic staff of the university and its group of institutions to be more innovative and creative in the discharge of their duties.
Correspondent Godwin Umeh reports that Rev. Fr Prof Anieke who gave the charge while declaring open a workshop for the workers, explained that creativity and Innovativeness will help to train quality graduates that will create jobs and not those that will swell the unemployment markets.
According to the Vice Chancellor, the academic staff should think outside the box, teach practical courses as well and encourage the youths to study courses that would help them create jobs.
He said they should make effective use of modern technologies being provided by the management of the university and teach the students to compete effectively with those in other parts of the world.
Rev. Fr. Anieke reminded the academic staff that analog teaching is gone, stressing that those who failed to adapt to the modern methods of teaching will have no space in the institutions.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the workshop will yield the desired results.
In a paper on Quality Assurance Mechanism for Effective Implementation of CCMAS, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Director of Academic Planning of the institutions, Sister Prof. Marysylvìa Nwachukwu said the management has plans for Innovative action in the new academic session and urged the staff to ensure that the end product meet the expectations of the students and enable them to contribute to societal growth.

She reminded the lecturers that as teachers, they are also mentors to the students. The DVC attributed the problems encountered by some students, especially those on transfer to a lack of transcript and late arrival of the required documents from their former institutions. Sister Prof Nwachukwu said the emphasis on the implementation of the CCMAS will be on the 100-level students. The DVC also urged lecturers to be Interested in research and produce graduates that will be in high demand.
Presenting a lecture on Artificial intelligence and the Future of Education, the Director of ICT, Mr. Chinedu Chibuzor called on the lecturers to brace up to the challenges posed by Artificial intelligence to educational development.
Mr. Chibuzor who identified impersonation as the major problem of the innovation said AI has advantages. He said that for GOU to maintain its ranking as the number three best private universities in Nigeria, the workers must meet emerging trends in technology.
In a reaction, the institution’s Librarian, Dr. Mrs. Juliana Iwu-James urged the staff to learn more about the application of Artificial intelligence especially in education.
The Dean of, the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences of the University, Prof Sergius Ude who presented a lecture on EFFECTIVE DELIVERY AND ASSESSMENT OF 30% ADDITION TO CCMAS announced that the institution had developed courses for CCMAS and urged lecturers to help in effective implementation of the programme.
“You should move away from the traditional form of lecturing and comply with the new practice, Prof. Udeh advised.
In a lecture on Effective Teaching of Entrepreneurship and General Studies/outcome-based teaching, the Director of Entrepreneurial Studies, Mr. Christopher Uwakwe stressed the need for tertiary institutions to train graduates that will not be problems for the nation, pointing out that about 600 graduates leave universities every year.
In a lecture on Evaluating Techniques of an Outcome-based Curriculum like the CCMAS, a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, Rev. Fr Somadina Ibe-Ojiludu stressed the need for learning outcomes at all levels of programmes and urged the lecturers to develop a high-level approach to socio-economic problems.
Rev Fr Ibe-Ojiludu also requested Nigerians to demonstrate commitment to injustice and ensure quality outcomes and consistency in quality.
Speaking on the Delivery of practical and other laboratory activities, the Dean of, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Environmental Studies, Prof Chidi Uhuegbu called for a review of CCMAS policy.
Other lectures at the workshop include Effective Use of Technology/Teaching Large Classes by Dr. Uchenna Franklin Okebanama and Use of Variety of Pedagogies beyond the Lectures in Delivering the CCMAS by Kingsley Ezechi.
