Improving Reading Literacy in Nigeria: A Multi-Pronged Approach!

Professor Felicia Eneh of the Faculty of Education at Godfrey Okoye University Enugu has called for concerted efforts to strengthen reading skills across Nigeria. Delivering the 13th Inaugural Lecture of the university, she emphasized the need for government policy, community-based programs, and technological innovations to address literacy challenges.

Speaking on “Interrogating Reading Literacy in Nigeria,” Professor Eneh highlighted the importance of community-run initiatives, such as reading clubs and libraries, which she believes can inspire a stronger reading culture, especially at the grassroots level. She noted the challenges to literacy posed by issues like corruption, terrorism, ethnic and religious tensions, and infrastructure gaps, which are critical to address, particularly in ensuring education access for all, including the female gender.

In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Reverend Father Professor Christian Anieke described the inaugural lecture as a hallmark of scholarly excellence. He emphasized that inaugural lectures are mandatory at Godfrey Okoye University, showcasing the intellectual quality and creativity of its professors.
