GO UNI HOSTS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOLAR ENERGY REVOLUTION!
Nigerian scientists have been urged to tackle the challenges of solar energy storage and the high cost of acquiring solar facilities!
The Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, made the call while opening a two-day international conference on solar energy revolution at the university. He emphasized that harnessing solar power effectively could solve many of Africa’s energy challenges.
Prof. Anieke praised the government’s efforts to decentralize energy generation and commended the Enugu State Governor for supporting the initiative. However, he raised concerns over the influx of fake solar products in the market, urging participants to find solutions and reduce energy facility imports.
Keynote speaker, Prof. Niyazi Serdar Sarciftci of Johannes Kepler University, Austria, highlighted Africa’s vast solar potential but lamented that it remains underutilized. He described solar power as peaceful and sustainable compared to nuclear energy.
Other experts, including Prof. Veronika Wittmann and Prof. Willoughby Adesina, stressed the dangers of fossil fuels and the need for proper installation of solar panels. Prof. Dieter Meissner called for stronger monitoring systems to detect counterfeit solar products and enhance safety.
The conference has brought together scholars from across the world and Nigeria’s top tertiary institutions, all working towards a brighter, greener future for Africa!
