INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

INTRODUCTION

The undergraduate Programme of International Relations is one of the earliest courses introduced when the university began in November 2009.

It is a four-year course and five sets of students have graduated from this Department since. The International Relations programme of Godfrey Okoye University has consistently grown from strength to strength and has added Postgraduate programmes, including Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) and Master of Science (M.Sc) Programmes.

PHILOSOPHY

International Relations course of Godfrey Okoye University is an Interdisciplinary course which involves a lot of subjects such as history, Economic, Politics, Sociology etc.

 

The philosophy underlying the International Relations Degree programme is to produce a flow of competent and confident graduate students whose minds are well developed and who are intellectually sound in the field of International Relations, and who can make meaningful contributions to the Political and Socio-economic development of Nigeria, Africa, and indeed the entire world. Our students are trained to analyse political, social, and economic issues throughout the world and develop possible solutions 

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The objective of the programme is to equip our students with the appropriate and sufficient knowledge, skills, ability, and competence for careers in government, industry, International Organizations, and similar occupations.  Our students will thus be interested and committed to the socio-economic growth of Nigeria, enabling them to take up administrative and managerial positions.

  • Stimulate in students an appreciation of International Relations theories and other tools of analysis, and application in different contexts at the national and international levels.
  • Provide students with a broad and balanced knowledge and practical skills in International Relations.
  • Develop in students the ability to apply their International Relations theories, analytical tools, knowledge and skills to the solution of international problems
  • Develop in students a range of skills that are relevant to both governmental and non-governmental agencies at home and abroad.
  • Generate in students the appreciation of the importance of International Relations in a national-political, economic, and social development on the one hand and in the maintenance of global peace and security on the other.
  • To introduce students to the concepts, theories, and practical values of International Relations in the contemporary Nigerian society.
  • To acquaint the students with the philosophy and methods of political inquiry, analysis and applications.
  • To focus scientific inquiry into and analysis of the relationship between the State and man, both as an individual and a member of social groups.
  • To provide a comprehensive postgraduate degree programme that will equip the students to cope with problems in the international arena.
  • To train high-level manpower for various administrative, management and leadership roles in the public service, the diplomatic corps, universities, and international agencies/organizations.
  • To train graduates to develop critical thinking skills required in handling complex problems in politics, administration and international diplomacy.

THE COURSES OF STUDY AVAILABLE IN THE PROGRAMME

Studying International Relations covers multivaried National and International issues too numerous to mention here, all of which are tailored to teach the student how the global system works, how countries cooperate, and how business works across borders. In addition to these courses are key skills, including transferable skills like research, Administrative, critical analysis, Intellectual Independence, Organisation, Interpersonal, Negotiations, and conflict resolution skills.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATIONS

 

The Department is engaged in an ongoing Research on African Development and Underdevelopment. It will be published soon.

    Rev. Sr. Dr. Lucy Umeh is a graduate of International Relations class of 2016. She is at present, a lecturer in the department of International Relations Godfrey Okoye University Enugu.
