Prof. Romanus N. Egudu is a renowned scholar of English and African literature, widely celebrated for his pioneering contributions to the study of West African and Igbo poetry. Formerly of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and later the University of Benin, he currently serves as an Emeritus Professor at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu. Over the decades, he has taught and mentored several generations of acclaimed writers and academics, both in Nigeria and internationally.

A prolific author and critic, Prof. Egudu’s works include Four Modern West African Poets, Modern African Poetry and the African Predicament, The Study of Poetry, and The Calabash of Wisdom and Other Igbo Stories, as well as groundbreaking essays on Achebe, Okigbo, and Igbo oral traditions. His research spans African poetry, Igbo traditional verse, oral literature, literary criticism, and postcolonial studies, positioning him among the foremost authorities on African literary heritage.

Prof. Egudu’s scholarship has significantly influenced the global reception of African poetry and continues to serve as a foundation for contemporary literary and cultural studies. His intellectual legacy rests not only in his publications but also in the distinguished writers, critics, and teachers he has trained across the world.
