ARRANGEMENTS COMPLETED FOR THE 2025 GOUNI MARATHON

Preparations are in top gear as 200 athletes across Enugu have officially registered for the 2025 GOUNI Marathon, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 2nd December 2025.

The Chairperson of the GOUNI Marathon and Bursar of Godfrey Okoye University, Professor Mrs. Modesta Egiyi announced this during a live interactive session on GOUNI Radio Sports. She noted that the marathon, with the theme “GOUNI MARATHON FOR ACTIVE AND EXCITING LIFE,” is exclusively for non-professional runners residing in Enugu State.

She encouraged interested participants to register free of charge at the following locations:

GOUNI Main Gate, Thinkers Corner

GOUNI Ugwuomu Campus

Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu

Professor Egiyi emphasized that the marathon is part of the university’s ongoing commitment to empowering young people across the state.

Contributing to the programme, the Technical Assistant, Special Duties to the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Boniface Onovo disclosed that the Marathon Committee is working closely with the Enugu State Government, FRSC, and security agencies to ensure a smooth and successful event. He revealed that tight security measures have been put in place to prevent cheating, including the deployment of six motorbikes and bicycles to control traffic and guide athletes.

Mr. Onovo further explained that the marathon will start at the Thinkers Corner Campus II Main Gate and finish at the GOUNI Main Campus, Ugwuomu Nike, covering a total distance of 21.79 km, with indicators placed at strategic locations. He also noted that secured armbands have been produced for all registered runners, adding that any form of cheating will result in instant disqualification.

He advised participants: “Moderate your practice sessions to avoid cramps, injuries, and exhaustion during the marathon.”

The Director of Sports at Godfrey Okoye University, Mr. Felix Emene also stated that students interested in long-distance racing are being mobilized to participate. He added that medical teams from the GOUNI Teaching Hospital and university clinics will be on the ground to conduct thorough health checks and provide support throughout the event.

According to him, accreditation of athletes will take place on December 1st and conclude at 6:30 am on the morning of the marathon, December 2nd, 2025. The race will be flagged off at 7am by the Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke.
