The second day of the 17th Orientation Programme for new and transferred students of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, focused on acquainting the students with the academic, digital, medical, and social support structures available to them across the university.
Speaking during the session, the University Librarian, Associate Professor Mrs. Juliana Iwu-James emphasized the vital role of the library in students’ academic development. She encouraged them to make effective use of both the physical and electronic libraries, noting that this would give them easy access to research materials and scholarly works related to their areas of study.
She guided them on the ethics of library use and demonstrated how to access the university’s E-library resources, which are available to all students remotely and on campus.
In a similar vein, the Manager of ICT, Mr. Lucky Azike walked the students through the process of course registration and navigating the university’s online portal. He advised them to ensure that all courses were registered within the stipulated timeframe to avoid academic challenges later in the semester.
The Vice-Chancellor, Reverend Father Professor Christian Anieke, also addressed the students, underscoring the university’s commitment to developing students who are confident communicators. He explained that the university’s emphasis on English proficiency was to strengthen their ability to perform excellently anywhere in the world.
Representing the University Medical Units, Dr. Juliet Eze educated the students on the medical facilities and resources available to them, assuring them of the university’s readiness to respond to any health concerns. She urged students to seek medical help promptly whenever they feel unwell, noting that the health and safety of students remain top priorities.
In their separate presentations, the Dean of Students’ Affairs (Thinkers Corner Campus), Reverend Father Casmir Nwokolo, and the Dean of Students’ Affairs (Main Campus), Mr. Friday Okemini enlightened the students on rules and regulations guiding hostel life and general student conduct. They emphasized the need for students to maintain cleanliness, discipline, and respect for one another while living in the hostels.
The Deans reminded the students that all forms of violence are strictly prohibited, and participation in community cleaning exercises within the campus is compulsory for all students.
The day’s sessions helped the new students understand the systems that support their academic journey and personal development within Godfrey Okoye University. GOUNI is a university that prides itself on combining discipline, innovation, and holistic education to produce well-rounded graduates.
