The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has reaffirmed its commitment to the integral formation of its people, the educational development of the region, a productive economy, and the empowerment of young people.
Speaking during the Holy Mass to open the Fourth Synod of the Diocese at Holy Ghost Cathedral, Ogui, Enugu, the Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Reverend Dr. Callistus Onaga explained that these commitments are the reason the Diocese continues to sponsor youths in different schools and skill programmes, as well as establishing Godfrey Okoye University.
Bishop Onaga highlighted pressing cultural issues such as burial and traditional funeral practices, the Osu and Ohu caste system, and the rise of neo-paganism as major challenges facing both the Church and society. He also expressed concern about the negative influence of social media and the lack of genuine youth empowerment in the country, noting how these issues affect the faith of the people.
He revealed that 531 priests currently serve the Diocese, adding that he has ordained about half of them. He further shared that more priests will be ordained on November 22, 2025.
In his address, the Chairman of the Synod Preparatory Committee and Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Reverend Father Professor Christian Anieke, said the Synod was convened in response to the growing challenges faced by Catholics in the Diocese. He emphasized that the goal is to deepen the faith of the people, address obstacles, and highlight opportunities for living out the faith more fully.
Professor Anieke explained that the Synod discussions will take place in three phases. The first focuses on strengthening catechesis, holistic education, and proper formation for the priesthood. The second will explore opportunities such as resilience, social welfare, productive economic initiatives, youth empowerment, community development, care for persons with special needs, and evangelization. The final phase will address the major challenges confronting the practice of the faith.
He encouraged the faithful to embrace this moment as a journey of renewal, reminding them that determination in the face of challenges is a powerful expression of faith.
During the Synod, the ICT Director of Godfrey Okoye University, Mr. Chinedu Chibuzor presented a paper on Artificial Intelligence, assuring the participants that AI would not replace priests but instead support their mission of evangelization.
Also presenting, Reverend Father Dr. Emeka Nwoye spoke strongly against polygamy and polyandry, emphasizing that any family rooted in genuine faith would thrive.
In another highlight, His Eminence, Cardinal Peter Ebele Okpaleke of Ekwulobia Diocese, encouraged priests to draw closer to the people, especially children, understand their struggles, and help strengthen their faith. He also called for stronger relationships between the clergy and community leaders, regardless of religious background.
The Fourth Synod of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu will conclude on Saturday, November 22, 2025, with the ordination of new priests.
