DR. ONYIA CHRISTIE OBY

SENIOR LECTURER/HOD

Dr. Onyia is an Environmental Biotechnologist, with expertise in bioremediation, bio-conservation, biosafety in modern Biotechnology and Bioethics; teaches courses in those areas, including – Metagenomics, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Genetic Resources Conservation and Management. Experienced technocrat with eight years’ experience as the pioneer Director of Department of Environmental Biotechnology and Bio-conservation in the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Abuja; a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology. Had experience at senior management cadre with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) where she was appointed the first Desk Officer for Biotechnology Programme in Nigeria, a designation she held until the programme gave birth to the current Agency- NABDA. Won several research grants from UNESCO, UNEP, World Bank STEP B, Google-Give Award through CBOL for the development of biotechnology in Nigeria. Has active involvement in the discourse on deployment of modern biotechnology, food security and environmental sustainability in Nigeria. She is an alumnus of the following Universities: Universiti Sains Malaysia, International Institute for Hydraulic Engineering, (IHE), Delft, the Netherlands, Administrative College of Nigeria (ASCON), Badagry, Nigeria, University of Jos, Nigeria. An active member of Biotechnology Society of Nigeria, Biosafety Society of Nigeria, Consortium for Barcode of Life, International Water Association, Global Genome Biodiversity Network and Fellow, Institute of Renewable Energy of Nigeria and a certified img (Integrated Microbial Genomes & Microbiomes) user. Christie Oby Onyia is a senior lecturer and head of department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Applied and Natural Sciences, Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, Nigeria and has several journal publications and conference papers to her credit.

Bioremediation; biodiversity and genetic resources conservation/microbiome;    biofertilizer production and food security; bio-energy; anaerobic digestion and biogas production.
