Godfrey Okoye University has successfully conducted the second day of its three-day spiritual retreat and capacity-building workshop for academic and senior administrative staff in preparation for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Delivering the keynote address on “Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence,” the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, Dr. Frank Okebanama highlighted AI as an essential instrument for modern pedagogy, research, and institutional innovation. He defined Artificial Intelligence as advanced computing systems capable of executing tasks that traditionally require human cognitive functions, including natural language processing, pattern recognition, data analytics, predictive modelling, and decision support.
Addressing the impact of synthetic content on traditional academic integrity, Dr. Okebanama noted that banning AI tools is ineffective. Instead, he recommended establishing robust institutional frameworks that define authorized AI applications, mandatory disclosure protocols, and ethical guidelines. He urged the university community to utilize AI to augment teaching and research while emphasizing that human oversight remains indispensable.
Following the plenary session, the retreat separated into specialized tracks tailored to staff cadres:
The administrative session addressed operational efficiency and institutional culture. The Registrar, Dr. Peace Ike presented on “Effective University Administrative System,” followed by the Director of Spirituality and Inter-Religious Dialogue, Rev. Fr. Theophilus Ndulue, who spoke on “Building an Effective Relationship with Staff and Students.” Additionally, Mr. Felix Ibekwe from the Directorate of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance delivered a detailed brief on “The University Academic Calendar.””
Simultaneously, the academic session focused on instructional delivery and character formation. The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Education, Rev. Bro. Prof. Ekene Osuji spoke on “Application of Skills, Competence and Professional Excellence in Lecture Delivery,” while the Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Okey Omeh delivered a lecture titled “Education for Life: Nurturing Competence and Character for a Purposeful Life.””
