GODFREY OKOYE UNIVERSITY HOSTS ICAN
The best private university in the South-East and South-South, Godfrey Okoye University has successfully hosted the 8th edition of the Annual International Academic Conference on Accounting and Finance of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) at the famous Peter Mba Law Auditorium of the University. The ICAN conference with the theme: “Sustainability and Digitalisation of Accounting and Finance “started on Wednesday, 15 February 2023 and ended on Thursday, 16 February 2023.
The hybrid conference had in attendance the 58th President of ICAN, Mallam Tijani Musa Isa, B.Sc., MloD, FCA, the Vice Chancellor of Go Uni, Rev. Fr. Prof. Dr. Christian Anieke (Eb. Mitterkirchen Austria), FLSN, FAL, Executive and Governing Council Members of the Institute, Fellow and Associate Chartered Accountants, physical and virtual delegates, students and participants from various institutions of higher learning (Academians).
Mallam Tijani Musa while delivering his welcome address, thanked the VC for their partnership proposal and collaboration towards the conference. He stated that the 8th edition provides a valuable platform for academics to explore the latest studies in different areas of expertise, as well as gain insight into diverse contemporary issues in the accounting profession. This conference does not only serve as a pathway for academics to exchange knowledge and receive inputs on their research papers, it also serves as an opportunity to delibrate on the state of the Nation and make our voices heard as stakeholders, he said.
The keynote address was delivered by the Vice Chancellor of Go Uni, Rev. Fr. Prof. Dr. Christian Anieke. He stated that hosting of the ICAN conference in the University are steps in the right direction for more motivation to beat the University’s won record. The Vice Chancellor who noted the putrefying state of the Nigerian economy, urged ICAN as the foremost accounting professional body to take a leading role in the onerous task of revamping Nigeria’s shattered economy and businesses. He further directed all teaching staff of the department of accounting of the University to belong to such accounting professional organisation as ICAN.
The Rector of Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Professor Austin Uchechukwu Nweze, B.Sc, MBA, M.Sc., PhD, FCA, JP who was ably represented, gave the lead paper presentation. It was a mind-blowing one. “Contemporary Issues in Entrepreneurship and Business Development” was the topic of the presentation. The speaker went on to analyse entrepreneurship in practical ways while also admonishing participants to grow with ideas and see opportunity in another persons opportunity. Do not leave a job to start a business but start a business to leave a job, he said. Many educating points were dished out during the presentation.
Earlier, Mallam Tijani Musa said ICAN is a known brand, adding that the institute encourages research and professionalism among accounting officials. Other fantastic presentations, concurrent sessions and other activities took place during the two days conference. It was a wonderful hosting for Godfrey Okoye University.
