Godfrey Okoye University marked this year’s International Women’s Day with a powerful celebration of the strength, resilience, and impact of women in society.

The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, described women as “perfect and marvelous creatures” who multitask effortlessly, carry burdens in silence, and love unconditionally with both strength and tenderness. His message, delivered through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Rev. Sr. Prof. MarySylvia Nwachukwu, also called on parents to raise their sons to respect and value women.

The event, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Convocation Arena, Thinkers Corner, Enugu, was organised by the Directorate for Gender and Women Affairs in collaboration with WABMA, brought together voices from academia, government, and advocacy to reflect on the role of women in shaping society.

In her address, the Director of the Directorate for Gender and Women Affairs, Prof. Blessing Udeh, highlighted the significance of the day as a time to celebrate women’s achievements, promote gender equality, and encourage empowerment. She described the theme, “Give to Gain,” as a reflection of the natural ability of women to multiply impact and uplift one another through knowledge and skill-building.

The keynote speaker and Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Eradication in Enugu State, Dame Prof. Benedette Ekwutosi Okoli, emphasized the importance of educating the girl child, noting that society stands to gain immensely when girls are empowered through education. She also drew attention to challenges such as early marriage, cultural barriers, and limited access to formal education, calling for stronger policies to address them.

Contributions from other speakers enriched the conversation. Mrs. Nkechi Igwe of WACOL addressed gender-based violence, urging women to speak up and seek empowerment. Mrs. Chidiebere Njoku of WABMA spoke on financial literacy, encouraging mothers to equip their daughters with sound financial knowledge and habits.

Dr. Ogbonna Torty called for gender justice and greater inclusion of women in decision-making, while Amb. Confidence Ebak spoke on health awareness, encouraging regular body care practices. Dr. Chidinma Michael of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital stressed the importance of oral hygiene as part of overall health.

A major highlight of the event was the recognition of outstanding women who have made meaningful contributions to society. Awards for exceptional leadership and service were presented to Dame Prof. Benedette Okoli and the Bursar of the University, Prof. Modesta Egiyi. Other honorees included Dr. Ogbonna Torty, Dr. Chidinma Michael, Edith Odoh, Rev. Sr. Henrietta Okafor, and Angela Kanayo.

The celebration also featured cultural performances, practical training sessions, panel discussions on birth control and menopause, and free medical screenings, all aimed at empowering and supporting women across different aspects of life.

At Godfrey Okoye University, the message was clear: when women are supported, educated, and empowered, society as a whole moves forward.
