Godfrey Okoye University sets a new standard as it inaugurates the pioneer Board of its College of Medicine.

Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, has officially inaugurated the pioneer Board of its College of Medicine, marking a major milestone in the university’s journey toward global standards in medical education.

The landmark ceremony, held on Monday, January 26, 2026, brought together the university’s leadership and distinguished medical professionals to chart a clear and ambitious future for the four-year-old College of Medicine.

The newly inaugurated board is chaired by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Prof. Dr. Christian Nwachukwu Okeke, Eze Osuofia I of Obinofia Ndiuno Ancient Kingdom and Pro-Chancellor of the University. Other members include the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke (Alternate Chairman), Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Frank Akpuaka, CMD of Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Dr. Amechi U. Katchy, Deans of relevant faculties and colleges, seasoned professors, medical consultants, and the Registrar of the University, Dr. Peace Chidi Ike, who serves as Secretary.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Inauguration Ceremony, Prof. Bartho Okolo described the board’s appointment as the product of a rigorous and deliberate selection process anchored on integrity, competence, and vision. He noted that the board has a demanding responsibility to shape a college where science is guided by ethics and excellence. Prof. Okolo also commended the College of Medicine for its impressive achievements, including nine distinctions recorded by students in their first external 2nd MB examinations.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke expressed appreciation to the university’s promoter, Bishop Callistus Onaga, for approving the constitution of the board. He revealed that since its Senate approval in 2022, the College of Medicine has grown to over 450 students and has expanded its academic offerings to include the Bachelor of Nursing Science programme. He further announced that the first clinical accreditation of the college is expected in the coming weeks and highlighted the university’s ultra-modern DNA Learning Center, described as the biggest in Africa.

Accepting the responsibility, the Chairman of the Board, Igwe Prof. Dr. Christian Nwachukwu Okeke assured the university community of the board’s commitment to quality-driven education, robust funding, strong research culture, and ethical leadership. He pledged that the board would work collaboratively to position the College of Medicine as a reference point for excellence.

With clear terms of reference focusing on resource mobilization, policy and oversight, academic standards, staffing, and public relations, the newly inaugurated board sets Godfrey Okoye University’s College of Medicine on a strong path toward redefining medical training in West Africa.
