Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has officially inaugurated the landmark DNA Learning and Forensics Centre at the main campus of GODFREY OKOYE UNIVERSITY, Ugwuomu.
Speaking at the commissioning, Governor Mbah emphasized that 21st-century security must be driven by innovation, science, and technology to combat crime effectively and ensure sustainable development. He described the Center for DNA Forensics and Criminal Investigation (CeDFoCI), established by GODFREY OKOYE UNIVERSITY in collaboration with the Enugu State Government, as one of the most critical investments in the state’s security architecture, designed to strengthen law enforcement’s capacity to track criminals and secure convictions through scientific evidence.
The event drew high-profile national and global figures. The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, along with the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, both attended and hailed the facility as a national asset that will transform justice delivery and security across Nigeria. The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, speaking through the Vicar for Priests, Rev. Fr. Victor Eze celebrated the center as a monumental achievement for the university, the state, and the Catholic Church.
The Director of the DNA Learning Centre Nigeria, Prof. George Ude, highlighted that the facility proves Africa’s capacity to build institutions that meet global standards. It is set to serve as a vital training ground for future forensic scientists, molecular biologists, and public health experts.
Vice Chancellor of GODFREY OKOYE UNIVERSITY, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke stated that the establishment reflects the university’s profound commitment to excellence, research, and societal progress. He noted that beyond criminal investigations, the center will offer accessible paternity and maternity testing to resolve family disputes using scientifically verifiable evidence while creating valuable job opportunities for Nigerian youth.
