FINAL YEAR STUDENTS OF GODFREY OKOYE UNIVERSITY ENUGU TRAINED ON TURNITIN AND AI
In a bid to promote academic integrity and deepen students’ understanding of research ethics, final year students of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, participated in a vital workshop on Turnitin and Artificial Intelligence
Addressing the students, the University Librarian, Dr. Mrs. Juliana Iwu-James cautioned them against manipulating apps and tools during their academic journey. She emphasized that Turnitin, the AI-powered plagiarism detection software, was introduced not to instill fear but to guide students toward authentic and well-cited scholarly work.
According to her, Turnitin helps identify instances of intellectual theft, but its reports should not cause panic, especially when students have followed academic rules such as proper citation and quotation of sources.
She stressed that research is not merely about personal opinions but about building on existing knowledge through critical analysis and referencing. To ensure easy access, students were given access to the Turnitin platform through their GOUNI email accounts.
The workshop featured hands-on demonstrations, an interactive Q&A session, and a thorough clarification of common misconceptions about AI and plagiarism detection.
It is a timely initiative that sets our students on the right path equipped, informed, and academically responsible.
