HOLY THURSDAY: A CALL TO PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS

HOLY THURSDAY: A CALL TO PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu and Proprietor of Godfrey Okoye University, Most Rev. Dr. Callistus Onaga, has urged the faithful to consistently lift their priests in prayer, reminding us that their spiritual responsibilities are growing as the Church expands.

Speaking during the Holy Mass to commemorate Holy Thursday, Bishop Onaga noted the increasing number of those receiving Holy Communion and the rising interest in the priesthood as clear signs of progress, but also of greater pastoral demands. “Our priests must be equipped, spiritually and morally, to guide the people aright,” he emphasized.

The Chrism Mass, which also featured a stirring homily by the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Ernest Obodo, echoed a strong message against blood covenants and the rise of Neopagan practices. He reminded worshippers that “the blood of Jesus is more powerful than any human blood,” and that “a sacrifice that costs you nothing, is worth nothing.”

In his usual calm but firm tone, Bishop Obodo also cautioned priests against embracing “noisy Pentecostalism,” urging a return to deep, authentic spirituality.

The event drew all the priests in the diocese, including our own Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, and other university chaplains.

As we reflect on this sacred day, the institution of the Holy Eucharist and Priesthood, may we all remember to pray for our priests with love and sincerity.
