GOU HOSTS 17TH INAUGURAL LECTURE. A POWERFUL WAKE-UP CALL ON NIGERIA’S DEBT CRISIS!

“Reckless borrowing is no longer just an economic issue. It’s a tool of economic incarceration threatening the future of our children.” — Prof. Modesta Egiyi

Godfrey Okoye University Enugu witnessed another landmark moment as it hosted its 17th Inaugural Lecture, delivered by none other than the university’s Bursar and Professor of Accounting, Prof. Modesta Egiyi. In her thought-provoking lecture titled “Today’s Reckless Borrowing: Economic Incarceration and Infertility for Tomorrow,” she delivered a fiery critique of Nigeria’s debt trajectory.

Prof. Egiyi didn’t hold back. She painted a grim picture of how strategic miscalculations, poor fiscal policies, and corruption have turned borrowing into a cycle of dependency, strangling productivity, and mortgaging the future. She stressed how borrowed funds are often wasted on inflated contracts and political gimmicks rather than productive investments that build the nation.

The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke echoed her sentiments, warning, “A country in debt might disappear,” referencing fallen empires that once ignored the signs.

The lecture drew top academic minds, including Prof. Eugene Nwadialor (VC, Tansian University) and Prof. Gozie Ogbodo (Rector, IMT Enugu), along with many dignitaries from across Nigeria’s higher education landscape.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Sergius Udeh, Chairman of the Inaugural Lecture Committee and DVC (Administration), emphasized the need for accountability in government borrowing.

Seventeen inaugural lectures in sixteen years, that’s not just a milestone for GOUNI; it’s a statement. We’re proud to be a university that speaks truth, asks hard questions, and sets the pace for academic excellence in Nigeria.
