{"id":137480,"date":"2018-08-20T22:20:22","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T22:20:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gouni.edu.ng\/?page_id=137480"},"modified":"2025-05-25T20:31:04","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T19:31:04","slug":"the-chancellor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gouni.edu.ng\/new\/the-chancellor\/","title":{"rendered":"The Chancellor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;147145&#8243; img_size=&#8221;600&#215;400&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"firstHeading\" class=\"firstHeading\" lang=\"en\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Ignatius Ayau Kaigama<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Ignatius Ayau Kaigama<\/b>\u00a0(born 31 July 1958 in Kona,\u00a0<a title=\"Taraba State\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taraba_State\">Taraba<\/a>, Nigeria), is\u00a0<a title=\"Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jos\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Jos\">archbishop of Jos<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"Nigeria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nigeria\">Nigeria<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ignatius_Ayau_Kaigama#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Kaigama studied for the priesthood at St. Augustine&#8217;s Seminary in Jos with further study in theology in Rome. He was ordained on 6 June 1981. He attended the\u00a0<a title=\"Pontifical Gregorian University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pontifical_Gregorian_University\">Pontifical Gregorian University<\/a>, earning a doctorate in theology in 1991.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Pope John Paul II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_John_Paul_II\">Pope John Paul II<\/a>\u00a0appointed him bishop of the newly established\u00a0<a title=\"Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalingo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Jalingo\">Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalingo<\/a>. He was consecrated as bishop on 23 April 1995 by the\u00a0<a title=\"Roman Catholic Diocese of Yola\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Yola\">Bishop of Yola<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Patrick Francis Sheehan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patrick_Francis_Sheehan\">Patrick Francis Sheehan<\/a>\u00a0OSA, the co-consecrators were Gregory Obinna Ochiagha, Bishop of Orlu, and Athanasius Atule Usuh,\u00a0<a title=\"Roman Catholic Diocese of Makurdi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_Catholic_Diocese_of_Makurdi\">Bishop of Makurdi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2000, Kaigama was appointed by Pope John Paul II to succeed\u00a0<a title=\"Gabriel Gonsum Ganaka\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gabriel_Gonsum_Ganaka\">Gabriel Gonsum Ganaka<\/a>\u00a0as Archbishop of Jos.<\/p>\n<p>Kaigama is currently President of the Nigerian Bishops&#8217; Conference and the also the President of the Episcopal Conference of West African Catholic Bishops. He is also chairman of the\u00a0<a title=\"Plateau State\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plateau_State\">Plateau State<\/a>-convened &#8220;Interreligious Committee for Peace&#8221;. Together with the late Emir of Wase, Alhaji Haruna Abdullahi, he has been involved in promoting mutual understanding between Christians and Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>After the riots in Jos in January 2010, he calmed the situation and clarified the conflict in the international press.[2][3] On 25 July 2012, Archbishop Kaigama was appointed a member of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pontifical_Council_for_the_Promotion_of_the_New_Evangelisation\">Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a title=\"Pope Benedict XVI\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Benedict_XVI\">Pope Benedict XVI<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ignatius_Ayau_Kaigama#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the Catholic Bishops Conference in\u00a0<a title=\"Nigeria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nigeria\">Nigeria<\/a>\u00a0supported legislation to make participation in a same-sex marriage a crime punishable by 14 years imprisonment. It noted the move as a &#8220;courageous act&#8221; and a &#8220;step in the right direction&#8221;. Kaigama argued that the action was &#8220;in line with the moral and ethical values of the Nigerian and African cultures&#8221;, and blessed President\u00a0<a title=\"Goodluck Jonathan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goodluck_Jonathan\">Goodluck Jonathan<\/a>\u00a0for not bowing to international pressure: &#8220;To protect you and your administration against the conspiracy of the developed world to make our country and continent, the dumping ground for the promotion of immoral practices&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ignatius_Ayau_Kaigama#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Kaigama also openly condemned the disproportionate focus on contraception in foreign aid programs. In 2014, Kaigama said: \u201cIn the first place, children die in infant mortality, in inter-tribal wars and diseases, but yet you come to say \u2018decrease your population and we will give you economic help.\u2019 We want food, we want education, we want good roads, healthcare.
