OWSD-GOU and The Okoli Chisom Foundation Empower Over 800 Students Through “Pad a Girl Child Initiative & STEM Outreach!

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World, Godfrey Okoye University Branch (OWSD-GOU), in partnership with The Okoli Chisom Foundation, carried out a life-changing outreach titled “Pad a Girl Child Initiative & STEM Outreach” on 26th September 2025 at Queen’s School, Enugu.

The event reached and empowered over 800 students through both educational and material support. Each student received either writing materials or sanitary pads, while many others participated in interactive STEM training sessions and discussions on menstrual hygiene. The OWSD-GOU team inspired the girls to explore the world of science and technology, encouraging them to see themselves as future innovators and problem solvers in their communities.

To further promote academic excellence, awards were presented to outstanding students and teachers in science subjects. The school’s management expressed deep appreciation for the outreach and appealed for more of such STEM-focused programs, noting that many students still shy away from science-related fields.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Chidinma A. Okafor, Coordinator of OWSD-GOU, emphasized the need for consistent mentorship for young girls. “Our young girls need guidance in choosing their paths and building confidence in their abilities. This outreach is just the beginning, and we are calling for collective efforts to continue empowering them,” she said.

She also extended her gratitude to Godfrey Okoye University for providing the support and platform that made the initiative a success.

The success of the outreach was made possible by the dedication of the OWSD-GOU organizing team, including Prof. Mariam Unachukwu, Prof. Christie Onyia, Dr. Joy Anosike, Dr. Linda Obi, Dr. Favour A. Udoeyop, Sr. Veronica Chukwu, Mrs. Adanna Eze, Ms. Chisom Okoli, and Mrs. Ruth Ugwu.

Together, OWSD-GOU and The Okoli Chisom Foundation are reaffirming their shared commitment to empowering young girls, restoring their dignity, promoting education, and igniting a lasting passion for science, innovation, and leadership.
