BUSINESS EDUCATION

Overview

Business Education is a specialized profession designed to provide students with knowledge, skills, and competence leading to employability and advancement in office occupations, pedagogical skills in teaching business subjects at different levels of the educational system, as well as self-employment or being an employer of labour. As an aspect of Vocational Education and Training, Business Education is designed to fill the gap between knowledge and practice by exposing students to General Education as well as specialized areas in Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Office Management.

PHILOSOPHY

Business Education programme is to provide individuals with relevant knowledge, skills and competencies to be self-reliant and economically self-sufficient for gainful employment, meaningful living, and to contribute to the development of the society. The programme is designed in consonance with the needs of the business community to ensure that education and training offered are consistent with the competencies for the present and emerging job requirements and opportunities.

Vision

The vision of Business Education  and Vocational Education department of Godfrey Okoye University is to produce professionally qualified graduate teachers with broad and balanced foundation in Business knowledge and practical skills, and who will teach business  courses in Secondary School, technical colleges and  Colleges of Education and Technology.

 

Mission

The mission of this programme is to transmit functional knowledge of Business courses concepts, principles and practical skills to the students who are preparing to teach Business courses or work in business establishment or establish their own businesses upon graduation.

 

 

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the programme are to:
  • Provide opportunity for practical job preparation or vocational studies in order to make students render effective and efficient services in office, distributive and service occupations.
  • prepare students, based on interest and aptitudes needed to enter into a business occupation, advance and profit in it.
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop an understanding of business and economic system of the nation so as to enable them to participate actively as producers and consumers of goods and services
  • Develop in students the basic awareness of the contribution which business and office employee makes to the nation’s economy.
  • Develop and improve personal qualities and attitude of students as required in personal and employment situation
  • serve as a guide for individual student for suitable placement in business and office employment
  • Enable students to have career consciousness and economic understanding of the free enterprise system
  • Prepare student to assume the role of building a future generation through teaching and knowledge impartation.
  • Prepare students for leadership position in both public and private life.

  6. Innovative and pragmatic skills that will enable students to operate and transact in a digital environment in both domestic and global marketing practices are developed
  7. Emphasis is now placed on professional accounting courses that will expose Business Education students to industry requirements, thereby bridging the gap between knowledge and practice in the accounting profession.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED:

The programme offered degree in Business Education. (Accounting option and office Management and Technology option.)

Admission Requirements

In addition to general university requirements, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. UTME

4-year programme – candidates must obtain 5 credit passes at GCE/WASC/NECO level, including English Language and Mathematics in not more than two sittings. In addition to an acceptable pass in the JAMB examination and post UME screening test.

 

  1. DIRECT ENTRY

(i)        NCE with an overall merit pass or above, provided the candidate also has at least 5 credits or its equivalent, including English language and mathematics at O/levels.

(ii)      National Diploma (ND) in any area of education related to Business, provided the candidate also has at least 5 credit level passes at O/level, including English language and mathematics.

(iii)     Higher National Diploma (HND) in any area of education related to Business, provided the candidate also has at least 5 credit level passes at O/level, including English language and mathematics

Graduation Requirement

In addition to the general requirement for graduation at the university, students of Business Education  must  offer and  pass all courses outline in the course structure having a total of 142 credit hours.

Programme/Sub-Discipline/Discipline structure to include period of formal studies in the Universities, Industrial training, planned visit and project:

Students receive their Bachelor Science Education, B.Sc. (Ed.) Business Education degree after four (4) years of rigorous academic exercise that includes course work examinations and original research project. They have to pass all required courses. Students go on excursion, on teaching practice and students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SWIES).
