The Management of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, has celebrated Christmas with members of staff in an atmosphere of gratitude, reflection, and joy.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Reverend Father Professor Christian Anieke, advised Christians not to lose their sense of wonder at God’s creation because of the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence. He noted that this sense of wonder lies at the heart of the Christmas message, explaining that even the Blessed Virgin Mary initially found it difficult to comprehend the message delivered to her, a reminder of how wonder gives meaning and value to creation.
The Vice-Chancellor urged everyone to cultivate gratitude, especially in appreciating the services rendered by servants and subordinates, and encouraged Christians to always choose peace over conflict, describing Christmas as a season of peace.
The celebration featured a quiz on Godfrey Okoye University, musical performances by the university’s live band, DJ Pure, and Rabbi of the Music Department, adding colour and excitement to the occasion. Staff were also treated to a special Christmas dinner.
In his remarks, the University Orator and Dean of the Faculty of Education and Arts, Brother Professor Ekene Osuji, commended the Vice-Chancellor for his generosity, noting that despite the harsh economic realities in the country, each member of staff went home with a bag of rice. He prayed that both staff and students would use the festive season to encounter Christ in a deeper way.
Responding on behalf of the workers, staff members expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for his visionary leadership, commitment to the growth of the university, and continuous efforts to improve staff welfare.
The event was attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Sergius Udeh; the Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Peace Ike; the Bursar, Professor Mrs. Modesta Egiyi; the Chief Medical Director of the University Teaching Hospital, Professor Amaechi Kachi; and the University Librarian, Associate Professor Juliana Iwu-James, among other principal officers.
It was a memorable celebration that reflected the true spirit of Christmas and the strong sense of community at Godfrey Okoye University.
