Godfrey Okoye University (GOU) is proud to announce the formal commencement of the Africa-UniNet Research Cooperation Project, titled “Application of Solar Energy in Agriculture for Food, Energy and Water: Nexus of Africa (SAFENA).”
In January 2026, a high-level delegation from GOU, led by Vice-Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Dr. Christian Anieke, completed a strategic mobility visit to Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz, Austria. This visit marked a pivotal step in bridging international expertise with local agricultural challenges.
The collaboration, which included Prof. Chidi Uhuegbu, Prof. George Ude, and Dr. Chidinma A. Okafor, involved intensive technical training and project planning alongside our partners at JKU, led by Prof. Niyazi Serdar Sariciftci.
Key Technical Achievements:
Agrivoltaics Integration: Specialized training on photovoltaic (PV) systems and greenhouse energy optimization.
Climate-Specific Design: Strategic planning for a solar-powered greenhouse prototype specifically engineered for Enugu’s environmental conditions.
International Knowledge Exchange: Site visits to solar installations at BOKU University, Vienna, to study irrigation and panel positioning.
Next Steps for GOU
With the formal approval to proceed, the project now moves into the design finalization and procurement phase. The upcoming months will focus on the construction of a smart solar greenhouse prototype on the GOU campus. This facility will serve as a hub for hands-on training for local farmers, translating high-level research into practical, sustainable solutions for the Nigerian agricultural sector.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Africa-UniNet for facilitating this invaluable platform for international collaboration and capacity building.
