Godfrey Okoye University Champions Inclusive Education Sponsored by the Sapphire Initiative for Special Needs and Disability

Sapphire Initiative for Special Needs and Disability, in collaboration with the Department of Mass Communication and the Faculty of Education of Godfrey Okoye University, hosted the International Conference on Inclusive Education and Disability Communication in Nigeria at the Peter Mbah Law Auditorium. Themed “Voices for Inclusion: Communication and Education Pathways for Learners with Special Needs in Nigeria,” the conference provided a dynamic platform for scholars, practitioners, educators, students, and disability advocates to engage in robust dialogue on inclusive education and effective communication that enhances learning outcomes for all learners.

At the opening of the conference, the Director and Founder of Sapphire Initiative for Special Needs and Disability, Ms. Nnenna Matilda Ogboso (an alumna of Godfrey Okoye University), delivered an inspiring address rooted in the conference theme. She noted that “the voices of learners with special needs must guide how we design communication strategies, shape inclusive pedagogy, and build education pathways that reflect equity, dignity, and opportunity for every child.” Ms. Ogboso emphasized that inclusion is not merely an aspiration, but a practice anchored in deliberate policies, sustained teacher development, and collaborative parent-school partnerships that honour diversity as a strength and not a limitation.

The Sapphire Initiative for Special Needs and Disability is a dedicated non-governmental organisation committed to advancing inclusive education, strengthening disability advocacy, and creating equitable and empowering learning environments for children and young people with disabilities and neurodiverse profiles. Through professional development for educators, parent training, strategic communication initiatives, and collaborative partnerships with educational institutions and stakeholders, the Initiative amplifies voices for inclusion and champions pathways that enable full participation in education for learners with special needs.

The Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, affirmed the university’s deep commitment to advancing inclusive education, describing the institution as “the most connected university in Nigeria and beyond,” highlighting its growing global relevance and intentional positioning as a hub for academic excellence that embraces diversity and inclusion. Addressing participants, Prof. Anieke stressed that the conference offers a unique platform for students to interact with scholars and academics beyond Nigeria’s geopolitical space and emphasized that inclusive and special education is anchored on the philosophy of one humanity, one human family, one earth, and one creator. He added that the more educators cater to learners with special needs, the more relevant and impactful they become as agents of positive change.

Delivering the keynote address, former Dean of the Postgraduate School at Bowie State University, USA, and lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at Godfrey Okoye University, Prof. Cosmos Nwaokafor, spoke on “Special Education and Communication Awareness: Building Bridges Using Communication Skills and Strategy to Overcome.” He highlighted the role of effective communication among educators, students, and parents, and advocated for the use of technologies such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to support individuals with communication impairments.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Education, Br. Prof. Ekene Osuji, described inclusive education as a fundamental human right, calling for social justice, effective policy implementation, meaningful access to mainstream education, and adequate teacher training to dismantle ongoing segregation and barriers within educational systems.

In her virtual presentation, Mary Elizabeth Merrill, President of Einstein Advocate, emphasized the indispensable role of committed and professional teachers in achieving true inclusion, noting that dedicated educators are pivotal in realizing equitable learning environments where all students can thrive.

Among other highlights was the goodwill message from Dr. Chinyere Onyeisi, Special Adviser to the Enugu State Governor on Education and Innovation, who commended the university and its partners for hosting what she described as a timely and impactful conference addressing a largely neglected societal issue. She noted that the conference aligns with the state government’s transformation agenda.

The event concluded with engaging syndicate sessions where academics in the fields of media, communication research, and education exchanged ideas and best practices, reinforcing the collective commitment to inclusive education and communication for learners with special needs.

Through this landmark gathering, Sapphire Initiative for Special Needs and Disability and Godfrey Okoye University demonstrated a shared vision of education that is inclusive, innovative, and globally responsive one that honours the voices, rights, and potential of every learner, and strengthens pathways that ensure meaningful participation for children and young people with disabilities in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
