The Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, has described the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) as a vital pathway for preparing students for life beyond the classroom.
He made this known during the 2026 SIWES orientation programme for 200 and 300 level students from the Faculties of Computing and Information Technology, Natural Sciences and Environmental Studies, as well as the Departments of Psychology, Economics, and Accounting. The event was held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Convocation Arena, Thinkers’ Corner, Enugu.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Rev. Sr. Prof. MarySylvia Nwachukwu, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that SIWES serves as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical experience, equipping students with the skills required to thrive in real-world environments.
In her address, the Area Manager of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Dr. Mrs. Fidelia Irabor, highlighted the programme’s role in promoting the acquisition of relevant industry skills and fostering the development of a competent indigenous workforce to meet the demands of Nigeria’s economy. She noted that SIWES provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, familiarize themselves with modern equipment and workplace practices, and ease their transition from academic life to professional careers.
The orientation featured insightful sessions facilitated by ITF officials, including the Head of Training, Mr. Maurice Eta Usang; SIWES Schedule Officer, Miss Babra Ojubor; and SIWES Accountant, Mr. Moses Ugwuzor. Discussions focused on key aspects such as code of conduct, roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, safety guidelines, documentation processes, and SIWES payment structure.
The programme reflects Godfrey Okoye University’s continued commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also industry-ready.
