A landmark celebration of a life dedicated to God and humanity took place at Holy Trinity Parish, Independence Layout, Enugu, as the community gathered for a Holy Mass to commemorate the 70th birthday and 45th priestly anniversary of Monsignor Obiora Ike.
The Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah delivered a moving homily centered on the power of virtuous friendship.
Reflecting on a bond spanning over 55 years, Bishop Onah noted that friendships built on mutual respect and Christ-like love endure far longer than those based on utility or materialism. He described Monsignor Ike as a man of deep spirituality and discipline who has opened doors to academic excellence and international scholarships for countless priests and lay faithful.
The Bishop highlighted several key aspects of Monsignor Ike’s ministry:
A Global Vision: Driven by the philosophy of being “all things to all men,” Monsignor Ike has spent decades fostering human development.
Institutional Impact: His compassion is visible in the establishment of the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP), which continues to empower the youth and provide essential training to the marginalized.
Leadership through Discipline: The Bishop reminisced on how Monsignor Ike prepared for his mission through a rigorous life of prayer, meditation, and self-denial.
The event drew a distinguished audience, including the Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, His Eminence, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, and representatives of the Enugu State Government, including the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, representing Governor Peter Mbah. Former Governor Barr. Sullivan Chime and members of the international community were also in attendance to honour the celebrant.
In his response, Monsignor Obiora Ike expressed his profound gratitude to his brother bishops and the faithful. He particularly thanked the Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, for elevating the anniversary to a diocesan event, emphasizing the importance of celebrating one another while still alive.
Dr. Ike Chioke, CEO of Afrinvest and Chairman of the reception, summarized the sentiment of the day by describing Monsignor Ike as an administrator par excellence and a scholar of formidable intellect whose reputation stretches far beyond national borders.
The festivities are set to continue throughout the week with a series of impactful events:
A tour of CIDJAP projects and an anniversary celebration.
A novelty football match featuring local priests.
An international conference on ethical education and interreligious dialogue.
A community homecoming day.
The week-long celebration will reach its climax with a grand Thanksgiving Mass at the Holy Ghost Cathedral this Sunday, April 12, 2026.
