A triple celebration for a man of the people, honouring Monsignor Ike’s birthday, his priestly journey, and 40 years of CIDJAP.

The Godfrey Okoye University community joins the global stage in celebrating a man who embodies the rare intersection of profound intellect and tireless compassion, Monsignor Obiora Ike. In a grand triple celebration held at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, the Church and the State came together to honor Monsignor Ike’s 70th birthday, his 45th anniversary in the priesthood, and the 40th anniversary of the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP).

During the Thanksgiving Mass, the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Ernest Obodo captured the essence of Monsignor Ike’s mission. He noted that, much like the ministry of Christ, Monsignor Ike’s love for the people is tangibly reflected in the institutions he has built. Through CIDJAP, he has created a channel of hope for the poor and vulnerable, ensuring that God’s mercy continues to reach His people.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah echoed these sentiments, describing Monsignor Ike as a champion of service and the epitome of true character. The governor highlighted how the Monsignor’s work in education, youth empowerment, and job creation has transformed lives across generations, marking him as a rare gift to humanity.

For us at Godfrey Okoye University, the celebration carries a deep personal significance. Our Vice Chancellor, Professor Christian Anieke, provided a poignant reflection on the man behind the titles. He described Monsignor Ike as a simple yet profoundly complex individual, a person of exceptional intellectual depth and unwavering ideals. Professor Anieke emphasized that the Monsignor remains a shining role model for both the clergy and the laity, particularly through his ability to communicate profound truths with deep compassion for the less privileged.

As a testament to his lifelong dedication to knowledge, Governor Mbah unveiled a selection of books authored by Monsignor Ike, along with publications written in his honour. This vast reservoir of knowledge serves as a lasting resource for the global community and a roadmap for the younger generation to follow.

The celebration was not just a look back at four decades of priesthood and social action, but a call to the future. As Monsignor Ike expressed his gratitude to Bishop Callistus Onaga and the many international collaborators in attendance, the message was clear: a life lived for others is a life that truly reflects the Divine.

We congratulate Monsignor Obiora Ike on these incredible milestones. May his example of integrity, sacrifice, and purposeful action continue to inspire our students and staff to be agents of change in the world.
