The Lesson of the Basin and Towel: Highlights from the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at GOUNI

The Lenten journey has transitioned into the sacred Paschal Triduum, beginning with a moving celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at the Omnium Sanctorum Chaplaincy, Thinkers Corner.

During the homily, the Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke reminded the faithful that the essence of the Christian life is found in humility, respect, and selfless service. He noted that Christ, though equal with God, chose to wash the feet of His disciples, an act that not only restored dignity to humanity but served as the ultimate blueprint for servant leadership.

Fr. Anieke explained that this Mass commemorates three significant pillars of the faith: the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the institution of the Priesthood, and the commandment of brotherly love. He emphasized that the Eucharist is a source of divine protection, shielding the faithful from danger and evil, and he urged the community to approach this sacrament frequently.

Reflecting on the nature of the Triduum, the Vice-Chancellor spoke on the profound love of Christ, who took on human flesh and endured the Passion and death to grant us salvation. He also made a special call for the congregation to support their priests with prayers, describing the ordained ministry as a vital blessing from God to His people.

The liturgy featured two deeply symbolic moments:

The Washing of the Feet: Rev. Fr. Prof. Anieke washed the feet of twelve members of the congregation, a physical demonstration of the charity and humility Christ demanded of His followers.

The Transfer of the Eucharist: At the conclusion of the Mass, the Blessed Sacrament was solemnly processed to the Altar of Repose, inviting the faithful to keep watch in prayer, just as Christ did in the Garden of Gethsemane.

As we enter these holiest of days, we are all invited to carry the spirit of the basin and towel into our daily interactions with one another.
